my daughter was here last night, she asked if i knew about john travoltas son dying.

i said yes, her reply was... scientology wouldn't let him take medicine and thats what killed him.

i said, well actually, the news said he was taking meds but they no longer were working for him.

That's great the you can talk to your JW daughter about other cults and draw her attention to the similarities they have with the WT. I am currently reading Steven Hassan's book, "Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves." That is one of the strategies he suggests for helping loved ones escape a cult. If they can see the manipulation in other groups, eventually they can see it in their own.

my mom told me about a sister in her hall that came in on crutches to the meeting sunday.

my mom asked her what happened and she said that thursday night when she was on her way out the door to the kh, that two demons attacked her.

they knocked her to the ground and one held her down while the other one jumped on her leg and broke it .

Another 1975 explanation - get your barf bag

this is from a jw discussion group that tends to be full of apologists for the teachings.

when we lived in livermore, ca a special talk was given by brother from bethel.

he used an illustration that really stuck with me to describe the role of the fds.

I realize these people are just trying to protect themselves from having to question their beliefs and face the reality of the WTS, but I find it particularly nauseating when they say that the 1975 situation was a good thing because it just got rid of people "serving for a date."

That idea is not their own. It comes from the WT who never wants to take responsibility for what it does and how it effects people. To make a false prophecy and then, instead of owning up to it, accuse those who question them of having wrong motives is lower than low.

1942 Consolation series "Japan Inspired of the Devil"

recently i obtained some issues of consolation for the year 1942 (predecessor for todays awake!

) through an online auction.

one of the first articles to catch my attention was a 4 part series of articles on japan, written just after the pearl harbor attack in december 1941. they begin with the february 18, 1942 issue.

Most parents would be proud...

about a year ago, he had an emotional crisis and questioned a lot of things, including his faith.

i thought (and hoped) that he would consider his beliefs and come realize that his beliefs were part of his crisis.

this was not the case, but he and i continue to be on good terms.

Your story has some similarities to my own. I finally had to realize that the WT is not the only problem my family is facing. I agree that it is extremely frustrating to see people you love act in ways that are so dysfunctional.

I hope you feel proud of yourself that you have found a better way to live, and can recognize this is abnormal and unhealthy. There are many people who grew up like we did and never have that realization.
